Weight Units at a Glance

Two parallel systems are used for measuring body weight around the world — the metric system and the imperial system. Understanding the relationship between units in each system avoids conversion errors in clinical, nutritional, and everyday contexts.

Metric system. The global scientific and clinical standard. The base unit is the kilogram (kg). One kilogram equals 1,000 grams. Body weight in clinical settings worldwide — pediatric charts, drug dosing, BMI calculations — uses kilograms. Milligrams (mg) and micrograms (mcg) are used for medication doses and nutrient reference values.
Pounds and ounces (US). Used for everyday body weight in the United States. One pound (lb) equals 16 ounces (oz). Adults typically express their weight in pounds; newborns are often described in pounds and ounces at birth. The US remains one of the few countries where pounds are the default for body weight outside clinical settings.
Stones (UK). The traditional British unit for body weight. One stone equals 14 pounds or approximately 6.35 kg. Adults in the UK and Ireland commonly express body weight in stones and pounds — for example, "11 stone 4 pounds." This unit is rarely used in clinical medicine but remains culturally widespread in everyday British conversation.
Metric ton vs US ton. One metric ton (tonne) equals exactly 1,000 kg. One US short ton equals 2,000 pounds (approximately 907 kg). These are rarely relevant to human body weight but appear in nutritional supplement manufacturing, food supply, and research reporting contexts.

How do I convert kg to pounds?

Multiply kilograms by 2.20462. For example, 70 kg × 2.20462 = 154.32 lb. For a quick mental approximation, multiplying by 2.2 gives a result accurate to within 0.2% — close enough for most everyday purposes. To go the other direction, divide pounds by 2.20462 (or multiply by 0.453592) to get kilograms.

What is a stone in kg and pounds?

One stone equals exactly 14 pounds or approximately 6.35 kg. To convert stones to kilograms, multiply by 6.35029. For example, 11 stone equals 11 × 6.35029 = 69.85 kg. To express a weight in stones and pounds, divide the total pounds by 14 — the whole number is the stones, and the remainder is the additional pounds.
