Height velocity measures how fast a child is growing in height over a specific period of time. It is expressed as centimeters per year (cm/year).
Formula
Height Velocity = (Height₂ − Height₁) ÷ Time Interval (years)
- Height₁: height at the first measurement
- Height₂: height at the second measurement
- Time Interval: time between measurements, calculated in years
How Time Interval Is Calculated
The calculator first determines the number of days between the two measurement dates, then converts days into years using the formula:
Years = Days ÷ 365.25
The value 365.25 accounts for leap years, providing a more accurate annual growth rate.
Example Calculation
If a child grows from 120 cm to 126 cm over 12 months:
- Height difference = 126 − 120 = 6 cm
- Time interval = 1 year
- Height velocity = 6 ÷ 1 = 6 cm/year
How to Interpret Height Velocity
- Below 4 cm/year: slower than expected growth
- 4–8 cm/year: typical growth range
- Above 8 cm/year: rapid growth (often seen during puberty)
Height velocity is an important indicator of growth patterns, but interpretation should always consider age, gender, and pubertal stage.
